Symbolic vs Legal Destination Wedding Ceremonies

About this video

Symbolic vs legal destination wedding ceremonies—what’s the difference, and why do most couples choose symbolic weddings abroad? If you’re planning a destination wedding in Mexico or the Caribbean, this is one of the most important decisions you’ll make.

When couples begin researching destination weddings, many assume they must complete the legal ceremony at the resort. But the truth is that about 90% of destination weddings are symbolic ceremonies.

Why? Because legal weddings abroad often involve extra steps and requirements. Depending on the country, couples may need to pay additional fees for legal documentation, complete blood tests, or arrive several days before the ceremony to meet residency requirements. These steps can add stress and logistical challenges during what should be a joyful celebration.

Symbolic ceremonies offer a much simpler alternative. Couples complete the legal paperwork at home before traveling, usually at their local courthouse. Then, when they arrive at the resort, they enjoy a full wedding ceremony that looks and feels exactly the same as a legal wedding.

For guests attending the celebration, there is no visible difference. Couples still exchange vows, walk down the aisle, celebrate with loved ones, and enjoy a beautiful ceremony in stunning locations like beachfront gazebos, tropical gardens, or oceanfront terraces.

Resorts throughout Mexico and the Caribbean specialize in symbolic weddings and offer incredible ceremony venues designed specifically for destination celebrations.

Choosing a symbolic ceremony often reduces stress, simplifies paperwork, and allows couples to focus on the experience of their wedding week instead of navigating international legal requirements.

At Romance Travel Group, we guide couples through every aspect of destination wedding planning—from choosing the perfect resort to understanding ceremony options and guest travel logistics. Our goal is to make your destination wedding simple, exciting, and unforgettable.

We plan destination weddings in Mexico and the Caribbean!

So, why are symbolic ceremonies so popular for destination weddings? Let's start by comparing what a legal ceremony is versus a symbolic. So, a legal ceremony means [music] that you are going to be following all the rules and the procedures of the [music] destination that you're getting married in. This means you might have to do blood tests. You might [music] have to pay a judge. You might have to arrive 3 to four to 5 days ahead of time. All of the laws that are set [music] in that destination will be required of you in order to have a legal wedding. [music] But it also means you leave that country legally married with the paperwork to prove it. On the other hand, a symbolic ceremony means that [music] you are legally getting married back in the United States and you're only doing a symbolic or almost like a renewal of vows in the destination [music] when you travel. This eliminates the need to jump all the hoops and do all of the legal things that are needed in the destination. So, you wouldn't need to do [music] blood work, legal paperwork. There's no need for a judge. There's no need to arrive four or 5 days [music] early. You can simply show up, get married, and celebrate. But what does this mean for your guests? Honestly, nothing. Your guests won't even know the difference that you're having a symbolic ceremony versus a legal. The only thing your guests will possibly see is that there's no legal signatures happening during the ceremony. There's no legal paperwork. There's no judge. [music] But honestly, your guests won't even know the difference. One of the biggest concerns couples have about doing a symbolic ceremony is the fact that they might have two different wedding [music] dates. meaning you have your symbolic wedding date, but you also might have the day that you were legally married back home. How do couples deal with this? So, one really creative solution to this is couples doing a legal wedding, say on April 15th of one year, but then planning their destination [music] wedding for April 15th the next year. Because you're planning on getting married and destination [music] weddings take a good year to plan all the details. Many couples are actually legally getting married a full year on the same day but before their destination [music] wedding. So symbolic destination weddings really give couples all the magic that they deserve [music] without all the stress.
