Why did you choose Romance Travel Group?
I ended up taking a lot of meetings with different destination wedding travel groups that were being advertised to me once I started looking into destination weddings. However, when I set up every meeting I made sure to look at the reviews beforehand. Before I even had the call with Abby, Romance Travel Group had glowing reviews in every place I had looked. Then once I talked to Abby, that sealed the deal for me. On that first phone call she was straightforward with every answer and stayed on the phone with me to make sure she answered every question I had. Then Heather helped us with day to day questions, setting up the website, and answering questions from my family. Not only was I so grateful for Heather, but my entire family was too. Romance Travel Group has so much to offer, they are there to answer every question, and they go above and beyond when planning for your wedding.
What led you to choose a destination wedding?
When we started planning our wedding we were originally going to do a big wedding in our hometown. After budgeting and outlining the major costs of the wedding we looked into a destination wedding out of curiosity. We soon found out that having a big wedding in our hometown and having a smaller destination wedding in a beautiful, tropical location were basically the same price. After we found that out, the choice was clear!
How did you select the resort? What were the deciding factors?
Dreams Playa Mujeres had a lot of good reviews for their wedding team, and everyone online who I had found that talked about their experiences there had nothing but good things to say about the resort. Not only that, but if you read reviews for the hotel you will see that they are known for being a wedding resort, and they often cater to at least one wedding a day. That meant they had to know what they were doing when it came to weddings, and it turns out they absolutely did!
Describe what it was like working with the wedding coordinator at the resort? What went well? Any challenges?
Since Dreams deals with multiple weddings a day it may feel at times like you are not their main priority. They often take days to maybe even a few weeks to respond to your questions and concerns, which can be so frustrating when it comes to your wedding. However, when they eventually did respond, and they always did, they would address every single item. I worked with Paloma at the Dreams wedding coordinators office, and she took care of every single thing I needed and eventually answered every single question I had. We had trouble with a payment link a week or so before the wedding. I was feeling so anxious about it because the link kept failing and the wedding was days away, but the morning after we had gotten there I ended up meeting her and she greeted me with a hug! So once we got there and had the meeting all of my worries went away, and we just paid in person instead of the link. It's beyond obvious she cares about every single client, and definitely made me feel so special and so welcome. Once we were there everything came together so seamlessly because of her and our onsite coordinator, Enrique. They definitely live up to their namesake-our wedding was a dream.
Tell us about your wedding attire – How did you find it? Who went shopping with you? How did you feel wearing your wedding attire?
I am beyond grateful for my aunt who actually made my wedding dress! She is beyond talented, and I am so lucky to have this incredible person in my family that has given me probably one of the most, if not the most, meaningful gifts of my life. My husband and a lot of our family members ended up getting their suits at Bonobos. Bonobos gave a discount to everyone we referred to them and they recommended excellent tailors in our area. I tried to make the wedding attire easy by not having a specific request for wedding attire, but that ended up being more difficult for people. Everyone ended up asking me a lot of questions about the attire. So I would recommend stating what kind of attire you prefer with examples just to avoid all of the follow-up questions.
Describe the booking process for your guests. Did they find that to be easy to navigate?
The booking process was pretty simple for the most part. We did have to explain multiple times to multiple different people that it is first come first serve, and if they don't see the kind of room they wanted originally that's because it is gone. Heather, me, and my husband explained this all before the rooms were even available to book, I think it's just that people became a little frustrated that the room they wanted was gone. So I would recommend getting a general poll beforehand of the different kinds of rooms people would like to book before you secure the room block, if possible. Also, Heather did a great job reminding people when the booking date is coming to an end and when payments are due. She sends regular updates with lots of helpful information which was super helpful.
Were your guests wowed by the resort and the all-inclusive concept? What was their reaction upon arrival?
I was nervous at first because I kept looking at all of the negative reviews and driving myself crazy with what could go wrong. In the end, everyone had a great time and was so happy to be there. The all-inclusive aspect is so nice because everyone was able to meet up in varying group sizes and eat meals together at all of the different restaurants, and all you have to do is show up. You don't have to plan on where to go and everyone is free to do their own thing. Chances are when you're sitting at a restaurant you'll see 10 other family members walk into the same place too and that's always fun! The resort itself was beautiful, the staff were all so accommodating and helpful, and there was so much to do. If you want a seamless experience for everyone, all-inclusive is definitely the way to go.
How easy/difficult was it to travel with your wedding attire? Did you carry-it on, where did you store it? Did you get a lot of comments at the airport?
My wedding dress and my husband's suit were all stored in a garment bag that we carried on. We had to store the garment bag in the overhead compartment. We originally asked the flight attendants if we could store it up front but they said no, which is kind of what we expected they would say. I've heard that sometimes they do allow you to store your dress up front, so it never hurts to ask. Even though we had to fold everything up and store it overhead, it wasn't a big deal because the wedding coordinators steamed our suit and dress a day before the wedding (which is why they ask you to bring them to the meeting). There were also steamers in our room at Secrets.
Tell us about your wedding – did you have a traditional wedding with a cocktail hour, dinner reception and dance? What was different about a destination wedding compared to a wedding at home?
The ceremony and cocktail hour were on the beach. We had mariachis during cocktail hour. The beach setting was perfect and they had set up the palapa bar nearby so guests could grab drinks before and after the ceremony. After the cocktail hour we all migrated to the mermaid terrace for the reception. They set up the buffet near the pool and we had 7 tables surrounding the dance floor. It was the exact amount of space we needed for our 65-guest count. The resort staff set up everything to perfection, and I'm so happy with the way it all turned out. I wouldn't have wanted it any other way.
What was the best part of having a destination wedding?
The absolutely stunning beach setting at sunset surrounded by all of our loved ones was the highlight of our wedding. However, every single day there with all of our friends and family, having fun, eating, and drinking was such a phenomenal experience that everyone will cherish forever. Traveling to such a beautiful place was so worth it for everyone, and it definitely wouldn't have been the same experience if we would have stayed home.
What is your most favorite memory of your wedding experience?
I don't have a single favorite memory of our wedding. I genuinely had fun every single moment I was there. Of course, our wedding was the high point but it was all beautiful. Everyone was so happy to be there and we just genuinely had the most wonderful time.
In what ways did Romance Travel Group make the planning less stressful for you?
I didn't have to work directly with the hotel which can sometimes be tedious and take such a long time. I didn't have to make a website with all the travel and wedding information. I didn't have to single handedly answer everyone's travel questions about every single detail. I didn't have to arrange transportation to and from the airport. I basically didn't have to do much at all and thanks to Romance Travel Group and Dreams I had no stress acne on the day of my wedding.
