A symbolic ceremony, on the other hand, is just as beautiful but has no legal weight. In fact, more than 80% of destination weddings are symbolic! Most couples take care of the legal part at home with their local courthouse or clergy, then celebrate with a stress-free ceremony at their destination. And here’s the secret: your guests will never know the difference... it looks and feels exactly the same!
Mexico – A legal ceremony must be performed by a judge. A blood test is required. The blood test is for STD’s and if the test is positive, a marriage license will not be granted. A symbolic ceremony has no legal bearing and is performed by a non-denominational minister, wedding coordinator, family friend or relative. The bride and groom will receive a symbolic marriage certificate without a legal license..
Dominican Republic – If you decide to wed here, go for a symbolic ceremony. For a legal wedding, all paperwork must be notarized and translated into Spanish, which will typically add an additional $1000 or more to your wedding costs. Only the judge can legally marry you, so you’re at the mercy of his schedule. Symbolic is definitely the way to go in the Dominican Republic.
Jamaica – One of the easiest destinations for legal weddings! Ceremonies performed by a minister are fully recognized.
Aruba – A civil ceremony performed by a judge in the City Hall are the only legally recognized wedding ceremonies in Aruba. If a religious ceremony is requested, it will be performed by a non-denominational minister, with no legal binding.
Costa Rica – Costa Rica also only offers legal ceremonies if they are performed by a judge. Religious ceremonies or vow renewals will hold no legal bearing, as they are considered symbolic.
Why Many Couples Choose Symbolic
We highly recommend symbolic ceremonies to keep things simple and stress-free. But if having just one wedding date matters to you, there are creative ways to make it work!
- Get legally married a year before your destination wedding. That way, you keep your wedding date consistent while also making things like name changes and passports easier.
- Have a small legal ceremony at home. This can be a sweet way to include loved ones—like grandparents—who may not be able to travel. You could even honor your parents or grandparents by choosing their anniversary date for your legal ceremony.
It’s completely normal to worry about choosing the “right” option. Remember, this is your wedding! The most important thing is making the decision that feels best for you and your partner.
