Iberostar Selection Riviera Cancun Destination Weddings: An Old Favorite Is Back on Our List

Romance Travel Group recently revisited Iberostar Selection Riviera Cancun, a longtime destination wedding favorite now operating under the Iberostar brand. The resort still stands out for its pools, spacious rooms and wedding venues, including the private Sky Wedding Deck, while its smaller beach remains an important consideration for couples.

Some resort visits are simply site inspections.

This one felt a little more like coming home.

Last week, our Romance Travel Group team visited Iberostar Selection Riviera Cancun near Puerto Morelos, Mexico. It was the first time I had stepped inside this resort in several years, but I knew the property incredibly well.

Long before there was an Iberostar sign out front, this was one of our favorite destination wedding resorts in Mexico.

A Little History With This Resort

The property originally opened in 2008 as Azul Sensatori Hotel by Karisma. I stayed there with my own family not long after it opened and absolutely fell in love with it. It quickly became one of the resorts we recommended most often for destination weddings.

Over the years, Romance Travel Group sent dozens and dozens of wedding groups here, and we became one of the resort's top-producing travel agencies.

In 2018, Azul Sensatori became Azul Beach Resort Riviera Cancun, but it remained part of the Karisma family. Eventually, the resort entered a period of transition. Karisma left the property in 2024, the resort went through additional management and branding changes, and in November 2025 it officially became Iberostar Selection Riviera Cancun.

Naturally, I wanted to see it for myself. A resort can have a beautiful website and gorgeous photos, but before we recommend it to one of our couples, we want to know what it actually looks like, how it feels, and most importantly, whether we feel confident sending a wedding group there.

After our visit, I can say that we do.

Iberostar Selection Riviera Cancun Today

Walking through the resort felt wonderfully familiar.

The overall layout and structure have not dramatically changed, which is a good thing. This has always been an easy resort to navigate and a comfortable size for a wedding group. But everything looked refreshed, clean and well maintained.

The pool areas looked fantastic. The pool tile has been replaced and updated, the grounds looked beautiful, and the lobby and common areas were in great condition.

The rooms we toured were lovely as well.

Today, Iberostar Selection Riviera Cancun is a family friendly, all inclusive resort with 444 suites located about 20 minutes from Cancun International Airport. That relatively short airport transfer is another big plus when you are asking 40, 50, 80 or more guests to travel for your wedding. There are multiple pools, including swim-up room categories, plus several restaurants, bars, a spa and activities for both adults and children.

Let's Talk About the Beach

Here's where knowing the resort firsthand matters.

The beach is small.

If your number one vision for your wedding trip is a huge, wide stretch of powdery sand where you and your guests will spend every day in the ocean, this probably isn't the resort we're going to recommend to you. And that's okay. No resort checks every box.

However, the beach here is sufficient, and beachfront wedding ceremonies are available if getting married with your toes in the sand is your dream. But the pools and wedding venues are much bigger selling points for us than the beach.

Interestingly, that is exactly what we're seeing in recent guest feedback too. Travelers consistently give the pools, staff, rooms and food strong marks while mentioning the small beach as the resort's biggest limitation. Knowing that upfront helps us match this resort with the right couple.

The Sky Wedding Deck Is Still the Star

Now we get to my favorite part.

The Sky Wedding Deck.

This was one of my favorite wedding venues when we sold the resort years ago, and after walking onto it again last week... yep. Still gorgeous.

The private rooftop venue overlooks the resort and Caribbean and accommodates weddings of up to 120 guests. There is plenty of room for a ceremony and cocktail hour, and the elevated setting gives you something completely different from the traditional beach wedding. And it is completely private!

If you love the idea of getting married outdoors in Mexico but don't necessarily want sand between your toes, this venue needs to be on your list. The resort has several other wedding spaces as well, including a Roof Garden, Plaza del Sol and multiple poolside venues.

A Poolside Reception That Feels Surprisingly Private

Another venue we toured was the popular poolside reception area with its open palapa style roof.

Technically, you're still within the main resort. But when you are actually standing there, the landscaping and placement of the venue make it feel surprisingly tucked away. And at night, once the pools quiet down and the resort lighting softens, I can see this being an absolutely beautiful reception space. You get the tropical atmosphere without feeling like your wedding reception is sitting in the middle of the hotel.

That matters.

Meeting the Wedding Team

We also spent time with Jesús, the resort's Director of Weddings and Groups, while touring the property.

And this part is every bit as important to me as pools, rooms and wedding venues.

When Romance Travel Group sends a couple and potentially dozens of their guests to another country for a wedding, we want to know who is on the other end of that relationship.

Jesús was terrific. He was helpful, knowledgeable and genuinely enthusiastic about working with us on future weddings. We left the meeting feeling like we had someone at the resort we could confidently work alongside when one of our couples chooses Iberostar Selection Riviera Cancun.

That relationship matters tremendously when you're planning a wedding hundreds or thousands of miles from home.

Why We're Comfortable Recommending Iberostar Selection Riviera Cancun Again

There was something pretty special about walking through a resort that had been such an important part of our destination wedding business years ago.

It still has its charm.

It still has fantastic pools.

It still has spacious rooms.

It still has some really terrific wedding venues.

But now it also has the backing of Iberostar, an established, family-owned hospitality company that has been in tourism since 1956 and operates more than 100 hotels around the world.

And after seeing the resort for ourselves and meeting the current wedding leadership, we're comfortable putting Iberostar Selection Riviera Cancun back into the conversation when we're matching couples with destination wedding resorts.

Not for every couple. No resort is. But for the right couple, especially one looking for a family-friendly all-inclusive near the Cancun airport, beautiful pools, spacious rooms and wedding venues that go far beyond the traditional beach ceremony, this resort absolutely deserves a look.

Could Iberostar Selection Riviera Cancun Be Right for Your Wedding?

Choosing a destination wedding resort isn't about finding the resort with the prettiest Instagram account. It's about finding the resort that fits you, your wedding, your guests and your budget.

That's where we come in.

We've personally visited hundreds of resorts throughout Mexico and the Caribbean, and we use that firsthand experience to help our couples sort through all those options and find the ones that actually make sense.
