So, you're dreaming of a destination wedding? Amazing! Before you dive in, here are a few key questions to ask yourself to make sure your day is everything you've imagined (and more).

What is my budget?

Did you know the average traditional wedding costs about $32,000? The good news is that a destination wedding can cost just a fraction of that. Typically, your budget will cover three main things: the resort, airfare, and the wedding package.

Keep in mind that prices vary depending on the season and where you're headed! If you can be flexible with dates and location, your budget will stretch further and give you more options.

Where do I want to get married?

When choosing your location, think about your guests, too. The easier it is to get there, the happier everyone will be! Spots like Mexico, Jamaica, and the Dominican Republic are popular because most guests can fly there in about 4–5 hours.

If you're considering something more exotic, remember that multiple connections and long transfers can take up an entire travel day! That can be tough on guests.

How many guests should I invite?

On average, about 50% of the guests you invite will attend a destination wedding. Don't be discouraged if not everyone can make it! travel and time off can be challenging.

A great option is to host a reception back home after the wedding so you can celebrate with those who couldn't travel. That way, everyone gets to be part of your big moment.

What kind of resort do I want?

Do you picture something quiet and intimate, or a resort that's lively and full of activities? Do you want an adults-only vibe or something family-friendly?

We always recommend all-inclusive resorts. They make budgeting easier for your guests since food and drinks are covered, and they often include perks like semi-private receptions, upgrades, or resort credits for the couple.

What kind of ceremony should I have?

Do you imagine saying "I do" with your toes in the sand, or under a beautifully decorated gazebo? Resorts usually offer several ceremony settings, and you'll also have a backup plan in case of rain! No need to stress about the weather.

Do I want a symbolic or legal ceremony?

Here's something many couples don't realize: about 80% of destination weddings are symbolic! A legal ceremony abroad is valid back home, but it often requires extra paperwork, added fees, and sometimes even a blood test. Because of that, many couples choose to take care of the legal marriage at home first, then have a symbolic ceremony in paradise! It's simpler and less stressful.
